Papua New Guinean Fair Trade Coffee Farmers
Hooked is proud to host two Papua New Guinean Fairtrade Coffee Farmers from the Highlands Organic Agriculture Cooperative (HOAC).

Nestled amongst the mountain peaks of the PNG Highlands live 2 million people who depend either directly or indirectly on coffee to pay their children's school fees, provide clothing and medicines and take care of cultural obligations. With the establishment of the HOAC co-operative 2,600 village farmers from 32 village communities spread over 500 square kilometres are now participating in Fair Trade for the first time. Collectively, these coffee growers support about 12,000 people. Coffee is the only cash crop in this area apart from a few local vegetables. Members of HOAC spend the year tending their small plots of coffee and individually processing their wares in using Organic and sustainable agricultural practices.

More information about HOAC can be found at http://www.coffeeconnections.biz/purosa.htm

HOAC has introduced programs to provide school students with text books and desks and to provide beds and medicines to four health centres and aid posts in the region. According to HOAC, "The future looks a whole lot better today" because of Fair Trade. As the popularity of this exquisite coffee grows, the benefits will flow back to the growers.
